Winkleigh 1st’s 2-1 Beer Albion 2nd’s

In Devon and Exeter Division 1, Beer Albion 2nd’s made the long trip to table-topping Winkleigh 1st’s on Saturday looking to get some much needed points.

Playing a long-ball game, Winkleigh started strongly and took the lead on 20 minutes when their centre back scored after a corner to the far post was headed back across the goal.

After the break and with the wind at their backs, the Fishermen took the game to their opponents. They scored a well-deserved equaliser on 52 minutes through a looping Kyle Gould header from George Harwood’s free-kick.

Beer were now well in this game playing some good passing football in contrast to the home side’s long ball tactics.

But against the run of play, Winkleigh scored the winner in the 68 minute after a hotly-disputed free kick was awarded against Beer on the edge of the penalty area. Keeper Adam Clinch save the free-kick well but a Winkleigh player was alert to the rebound and scored from close range.

George Harwood at the centre of their defence was Beer’s man-of-the-match.

Despite the disappointing result the mood remains positive for the Easter Monday game at home to Newtown 2nds. A win is much-needed to avoid being dragged into a desperate relegation battle.
